Migration for access and cost control

A major bio-pharmaceutical concern’s unique business drives unique storage requirements. Not only do they have massive amounts of clinical and research data to store (in perpetuity), they need to be able to readily access that data on demand to adhere to some of the world’s most stringent compliance requirements. Due to multiple, incompatible and aging tape technologies, they were not well positioned to do this.

Their project included consolidating these multiple tape technologies (predominantly DLT and 8mm) and backup formats to a single 9940 automated environment and Legato backup. Budget constraints, however, left little or no money to perform the migration after the hardware investment was taken into consideration.

PeakData presented the customer with a highly cost-effective migration process and a proposal that included migration to SDLT tape instead of 9940. The combination of super efficient, highly reliable migration processes and lower cost, high-density media and tape technology got the customer both the cost and the solution that fit best with their needs.
