PeakData Services Lists 14 of the Top 20 Fortune 500 Financial Services Firms as Clients; 89 of the Fortune 500
BOULDER, Colo. May. 21, 2009 -- PeakData Services, Inc, a fast-growing IT provider dedicated to information security compliance and risk mitigation services, said today that its clients include 14 of the top 20 financial services firms on the Fortune 500 financial services list as well as 89 of the Fortune 500.
The company said it has grown rapidly in line with the increased focus that enterprises large and small are now placing on securing data at every stage of its lifecycle, a trend it says is confirmed by a newly released IDC white paper focused on securing data on failed or decommissioned media (Source: IDC, Best Practices for Protecting Data in Failed and Decommissioned Storage Media, Doc # 217966, April 2009).
According to Vivian Tero, Program Manager for Compliance Infrastructure, IDC, data privacy practices should be incorporated into an organization’s broader information management practice. In reality, most corporations’ information management and storage practices remain largely disjointed from their data privacy and information security functions.
Too often, corporations fail to recognize the risk of data breaches from improperly disposing of failed drives, old laptops, recycled media, and backup tapes. This failure to assess the risks associated with the physical transport of storage media has resulted in several high-profile data breaches. Among Miss Tero’s recommendations:
• Firms must audit and inventory storage media, storage systems, applications, and computing systems that may contain personal or confidential information.
• They must identify the options available to manage the probable data breach from the failed media and decommissioned resources.
• They must formalize and document practices for handling the disposition of data in failed and decommissioned media.
"Organizations of every size and type are facing increasing risk mitigation challenges on all fronts and this trend has had a direct effect on our rapid growth,” said Glenn Jacobsen, vice president and general manager of PeakData Services. “The IDC study is the first we know of that examines the specific challenges associated with failed or decommissioned storage media. It can serve as a guidepost for those organizations developing policies and practices or as a benchmarking tool for those with practices in place. We are pleased to make the study available at www.peakdataservices.com,” Jacobsen said.
